February Hire Results for Job Seekers

All shapes and sizes: Jefferson County Offers a Variety of Job Fairs

Jefferson County Workforce Center prides itself on the variety of job fairs it offers its job seekers. From fairs focusing on a specific industry to fairs that focus on certain types of job seekers, Jefferson County Workforce Center knows how to create a job fair that works for both sides of the employment equation – job seekers and employers.

During 2007, Jefferson County Workforce Center offered several great job fairs for job seekers. From the spring success of the 50 and Fabulous Job Fair to the Hot Jobs! Hiring Event in September, JCWFC led the way with great opportunities to find great jobs.

50 and Fabulous - Who knew?

Nowadays the age of 50 is another milestone to be reckoned with for some, but can it also be a milestone that is an asset? The answer is a resounding yes. Last May, over 2,500 “boomer” job seekers descended upon the Jefferson County Fairgrounds looking for employers who shared the belief that experience is indeed an asset.

Representatives from Starbucks, Safeway, EchoStar, RTD, and Wells Fargo to name just a few of the companies who came to spend the day on March 14, 2007 finding out how the 50+ crowd could become one of their most valuable resources. Job fair registrants were able to complete applications and, in some cases, have brief interviews for a wide variety of positions from part-time to full-time and permanent to temporary.

Kay Ross, a Workforce Specialist with the Jefferson County Workforce Center, works closely with job seekers who are baby boomers. She states, “This job fair is a unique opportunity because its focus is on the fact that age and experience can be an asset. Often times, boomers and people over 50 discount the fact that their experiences and work ethic can be seen as an asset to employers.”

With baby boomers making up an increasingly larger portion of the population and with retirement becoming redefined by new careers or a need to continue working in some capacity, the 50+ Job Fair is a great resource for job seekers and employers alike. Mark your calendars for this year’s fair on April 22, 2008 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Industry focused job fairs – A Win-Win for Job seekers and
Employers Alike

Unlike job fairs such as the 50+ and Fabulous Job Fair and the Youth Job Fair and Career Expo (see separate article on this great event), some of the Jefferson County Workforce Center’s job fairs focus on a certain type of industry. Two examples from 2007 are the Casino Job Fair and the Hot Jobs! Hiring Event.

2007 Casino Job Fair

Frequently here on the Front Range, we hear about people heading “up the hill” to enjoy a day at the casinos. But, had you considered the fact that many of the casinos up the hill need people to head up the hill to work as well? The Jefferson County Workforce Center works closely with casinos in Clear Creek and Gilpin counties to help them meet their hiring needs.

By sponsoring a job fair just for casinos, the Jefferson County Workforce Center helps supply meet demand. 2007’s Casino Job Fair included representatives from Ameristar Casino, Black Hawk, Bullwhackers Casino, Century Casino & Hotel, Colorado Central Station Casino, Fitzgeralds Casino- Black Hawk, Fortune Valley Hotel & Casino, Isle of Capri Casino & Hotel, The Lodge Casino at Black Hawk, and The Gilpin Casino. A wide range of work opportunities were offered from dealers, administration, security, and many others.

Job seekers attending the event know the type of industry and the type of work available so they can create targeted resumes that match their skills and abilities with the needs of the casinos. This job fair presents a great opportunity for experienced casino workers as well as workers with transferable skills from similar industries such as food service and hotel and hospitality. The job fair is a great one-stop shop for job seekers who want to work at casinos and have the skills needed to meet the needs of employers. Because the event is targeted, supply meets demand in a very efficient way for all involved.

The 2008 Casino Job Fair is slated for May 13, 2008 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Job seekers who are interested in working at a casino should mark their calendars now for this exciting event. Check our website at www.jeffcoworkforce.org as the date approaches to get more details.

Hot Jobs! Hiring Event: Top companies seeking highly skilled workers

On September 27, 2007, the Jefferson County Workforce Center and Red Rocks Community College sponsored a Hot Jobs! Hiring Event that featured three companies seeking qualified employees. Representatives from Coors, SunDyne Corporation, and Xcel Energy were on hand to take applications and conduct interviews for over 500 job seekers.

Once again, this was an event that made good use of everyone’s time as it featured certain industries and particular positions. Job seekers could prepare targeted resumes in advance, knowing the types of jobs and industries that would be featured during the event.

Job seekers were happy with the event because they knew their efforts were going towards actual job opportunities. Employers were pleased because a steady stream of qualified applicants was available throughout the event.

As this article has shown, the Jefferson County Workforce Center offers a wide range of Job Fair and Hiring Event opportunities throughout the year. Job seekers can take advantage of all these great events by keeping informed via our website at www.jeffcoworkforce.org. Mark your calendars for events that suit your needs. Attend our Nuts and Bolts Workshops ( for the current schedule) to assist you in preparing resumes and other job search materials to make your job search and your time spent at a job fair more successful.
