Give and Receive Through VolunteeringMany career and job search counselors will advise their candidates to volunteer. Volunteer opportunities offer two key benefits for job seekers. First of all, it is another way to meet people and network. Choose a non-profit or cause that you are passionate about and you will meet other people who share your passion. These people may know of opportunities with similar groups and invite you to gatherings for other events. Secondly, volunteering offers the chance to improve and maintain your skills. Frequently, non-profits need help answering phones, completing computer tasks, managing inventory, and other tasks which are great ways to work on skills. Sometimes you can offer to provide a service such as grant writing or teaching a workshop which may be something the non-profit needs but does not have the money to purchase. Volunteers give as much as they get. For the job seeker, volunteering serves many purposes. Along with building your network and skills, the best reward of volunteering is the sense of accomplishment. For job seekers who have been laid off or who are currently not employed, volunteering offers a wonderful chance to be busy and make a difference. The good feelings you get from volunteering can help you stay motivated and positive during your job search. Source consulted: “Don’t be a Turkey” by Donald K.
